It's just been repeated so many times that it's become truth!<br><br>The quote from the NYT article is, "Avoid using table salt, which typically contains anti-caking agents and other additives that can cause problems. Instead, try mixing a teaspoon of pickling salt with a pint of water." That's the clearest explanation I've gotten. The "problems" are probably irritation to the nasal cavities. This is one of the reasons I switched to using prepared saline packets. It's a good question, and honestly I never questioned it. It's just been repeated so many times that it's become truth!
