This is a tongue twister warm-up that my mother taught me back when I was a kid. In the past few weeks, I have been involved with a lot of criticism, both giving and receiving. I would like to share some concerns I have with criticism in this post. Yes, I get frustrated with my singing sometimes. Sometimes, it happens a lot. Every day. Constantly. “Why am I doing this? I suck. I hate singing…whine whine whine…” Then I stop and pay attention. And the proper path opens. A student of mine is working on “Tornami a vagheggiar” from Handel’s Alcina. So I designed this vocalise to work on the some of the challenges outside of the aria itself.
This TED video couldn’t have come at a better time for me, personally. Having just had my conducting debut (I conducted NMSU’s opera scenes, and I really enjoyed it…and enjoy saying “conducting debut”), I really appreciated this talk given by Itay Talgam about how various conductors lead. It’s complete with videos |
