Take it from me – as someone who’s quit too many times after saying ‘yes’ – that it’s better to think ahead and say ‘no’ than say ‘yes’ to something you don’t really want to do. Or CAN’T do.
To get to the point where you can expect to earn some living from singing, you have to plan and set priorities. Otherwise you’ll just get sidetracked endlessly until you give up on yourself. It’s unfortunately not enough to merely be a good technical singer. To become a great singer you have to pick your priorities.
Therefore, when you have to give a ‘yes’ or ‘no’, ask yourself:
Is this a priority?
Of course, to answer this question, you must have priorities. If you don’t, then it’s a priority to sit down and figure out your priorities.
Good post!
I've said “yes” far too many times, usually when avoiding conflict or tryin' to make myself look good. It rarely ends well.
The prioritizing question I ask myself these days is “Will this [job/meal/garment/person] help me achieve my big dreams?”
Sure! The question really applies to every choice.
