PREMIERE: Tosca

September 11, 2021 By Ian Sidden Leave a Comment

Tonight at Opernhaus Dortmund, we’re premiering our Tosca at 19:30. Although there were a smattering of productions last season for reduced cast, orchestra, and audience size, this is the first premiere the opera chorus will be participating in since our March 13, 2020 Geisterpremiere of La Muette de Portici, which marked the last time we performed on our own stage.

Since then, we’ve been part of a handful of projects that were mostly streamed online, but we’re ready to be in front of an audience and singing live in a big house again. And this production is the right way to start moving back towards normality. I believe that our audience will be thrilled with what they see and hear tonight, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.

PS: Look for me looking mean in a costume akin to a S.W.A.T. uniform.

Premiere: La muette de Portici

March 13, 2020 By Ian Sidden

Tonight at Theater Dortmund, we’re having our premiere of Auber’s La muette de Portici. However, it will be a closed performance due to restrictions on public gatherings on account of COVID-19. The first open performance will take place in early May.

In addition to singing in the chorus, I’m singing a small role as a fisher who comes to warn his compatriots of impending doom.

Toi toi toi to all of my colleagues, and I wish everyone good health as the world confronts this great challenge.

“Im weißen Rössl” Morning After

I don’t think I’ve ever heard our audience laugh as hard or as consistently as they did last night. The creative combination of the cast and Regie team has really made magic here.

For my part, I enjoy singing the tunes, and I’m always happy to have a chance to do any kind of stage dancing. Naturally, the chorus isn’t tasked with carrying the bulk of the dancing duty, but I’m happy how well integrated we were into the big numbers. It’s always thrilling to hit that final pose and hear the audience erupt. That will never get old.

Premiere: Wo die Wilden Kerle Wohnen

June 16, 2019 By Ian Sidden

English

Today is the premiere of Where the Wild Things Are, which is the opera adaptation by composer Oliver Knussen of the well-known children’s book of the same title by Maurice Sendak. I’m playing the Rooster Wild Thing. I’ve enjoyed working on this piece with my fellow cast mates and the creative team, and I always enjoy doing the children’s shows, so I’m really looking forward to getting this in front of people.

Here’s one I’ve been looking forward to for awhile. Tonight at Opernhaus Dortmund, we’re premiering Frédegonde for the first time in Germany. It’s a work inspired from the early history of the Merovingians in what is now France and the ongoing feud between two of the queens, Brunhild and Frédegonde. The work was composed by […]

One Year Later

On March 13, 2020, we had our last large premiere at Theater Dortmund with the chorus onstage. We performed “Die Stumme von Portici” to a nearly empty auditorium, a so-called Geisterpremiere. We nevertheless, of course, gave it our all. There have been other premieres since then as the lockdowns have come and gone, but so […]
